Unser Jr optimistic in Miami

Al Unser Jr believes he has a good chance of achieving a result in Sunday's Miami round of the Indy Racing League despite qualifying his Galles Racing G-Force-Oldsmobile Aurora in a lowly 19th place at the Homestead-Miami Speedway

Prior to the start of the IRL season, the Galles Racing outfit billed itself as the IRL's 'Super Team'. With two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Unser anchoring a team that also includes rookies Casey Mears and Didier Andre, team owner Rick Galles was confident he had put together a winning combination.

But the team had a terrible start to the season at Phoenix on March 18 and continues to struggle at this weekend's Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami.

"The car got loose during the middle of my qualifying run because we had a cut tyre," said Unser. "But I think we have a good race car for tomorrow so we will just have to do some passing on the track and be quick in the pits. This track can be tricky in terms of passing, but it will be a great show for the fans because of the great competition in this series."

Mears joined the IRL at the beginning of the season and hoped to continue the family legacy in Indy car racing. His uncle, Rick Mears, is a four-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and his father, Roger, was a two-time starter at Indy.

"After yesterday we made some pretty significant changes to our set-up and it's made a world of difference," said Mears. "I feel so much better about the car, that I wish this is where we had started in the first place. My goal for this race, and even for Atlanta, is to continue getting comfortable with the G-Force, and improve with every session. Since we've had such a late start, I'm willing to sacrifice somewhat on speed, in an effort to get the car as good as it can be."
