Hornish Jr makes it two wins in a row
Sam Hornish Jr. made it two victories in a row when the 21-year-old made a bold, wheel-to-wheel pass of Eliseo Salazar with 14 laps remaining in Sunday's Infiniti Grand Prix of Miami.
The Ohio driver, who had the dominant car in the event, was able to drive away from the field to win his second Indy Racing League event in as many races this season.
Hornish was able to hold off fellow Ohio native Sarah Fisher, who passed Salazar for second place with 11 laps remaining.
Fisher's race car was faster than Hornish's and she was able to reel in the driver with eight laps left. But Hornish was able to maintain his lead in the closing stages to win his second race of the season for Pennzoil Panther Racing.
Hornish defeated Fisher by 1.87 seconds. Salazar was third followed by rookie Felipe Giaffone and Jeff Ward.
The season-opener winner was well on his way to winning his second race in a row until his car stalled on his final pit stop on lap 168. The 21-year-old driver from Defiance, Ohio was running low on fuel when he entered the pits. But when the engine did not refire, he was the last car out of the pits, dropping from first to fourth.
That put Salazar into the lead followed by Fisher and Lazier when the green flag waved on lap 172. Fisher was able to stay to the rear of Salazar's car as the front two broke away. But back in the pack, Hornish's yellow Pennzoil Dallara was flying as it sliced through lapped traffic to close on the rear of Buddy Lazier. Hornish passed Lazier in the third turn on the 177th lap. It took the air off the rear wing of Lazier's Dallara and it lost grip, sliding into the fourth turn wall crashing rear-end first.
Earlier in the race, Jeff Ward started on the pole and drove the field to a very slow start. When the green flag waved Ward was able to drive away from the field but the yellow flag waved during the second lap when Stan Wattles spun out of the fourth turn and backed into the pit retaining wall.
Ward was in front when the race restarted on lap seven with Ward ahead of Ray, Felipe Giaffone and Hornish. But the driver who won at Phoenix on March 18 was flying and Hornish was able to pass Ward for the lead on lap 14.
When Robbie Buhl's car stalled in the second turn, the second caution flag of the race waved on lap 29. That allowed the leaders to pit. Ward was able to pass Hornish for the lead when the green flag waved on lap 35. By lap 63, however, Hornish was able to speed past Ward for the lead.
Airton Dare's cars stopped on lap 65 for another caution flag. The leaders pitted two laps later and Hornish was first out of the pits. The green flag waved on lap 72 with Hornish followed by Ward, Lazier, Ray and Fisher.
Hornish dominated the final 100 laps of the race before his stalled race car made it a battle. But Hornish could not be denied as he was able to pass the three cars ahead of him in the closing stages to take the victory.
