Toyota seeks Motegi treble
Toyota wants to end the IRL's 3.5-litre engine era with a third win on the trot at the Honda-owned Twin Ring Motegi circuit. The series switches to 3-litre power-plants for the following race, the Indianapolis 500
Toyota-powered cars have won on both the series' last two outings at the Japanese track - with Ganassi's Bruno Junqueira at the wheel in 2002 and Kelley Racing's Scott Sharp last year.
The Penske and Chip Ganassi squads probably represent Toyota's best shot with Sam Hornish Jr and Helio Castroneves at Penske and Scott Dixon and Darren Manning at Ganassi with Andretti Green Racing trio Dario Franchitti, Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan leading the Honda challenge.
The engine-builders have found the final days of the 3.5-litre era an interesting challenge as Toyota vice president of motorsports Jim Aust explained: "It's been a delicate balance of continuing development on the current engine, while pushing forward on the new 3-litre. Hopefully we will be able to combine the best of both worlds."
