Rice gets Cheever drive

Rising American driver Buddy Rice will drive a third Cheever Racing Dallara-Infiniti at this weekend's inaugural IRL race at the Michigan Speedway

The 26-year-old passed his rookie test at the Kentucky Speedway on Tuesday and comes on board to help the team translate its strong race pace into its first win of the season.

"This is an excellent opportunity. Cheever Racing is one of the top teams in the IRL and they've been fast all year," said Rice, who has raced in the Grand American Rolex series this year and is a former race winner in Toyota Atlantic.

Rice has been supported by Cheever's title sponsor Red Bull since 1998 and his links helped secure the drive alongside Eddie Cheever and Tomas Scheckter.

"We have a commitment to ourselves and Red Bull to win races," said Cheever. "Buddy, who has been very impressive in testing with us, is joining the team to give us another shot at winning on Sunday. Given our performance at the superspeedways this season, I am hopeful that with three cars in the field we can leave Michigan with a victory in hand."
