Nashville: Barron's night

Former CART racer Alex Barron scored his first IRL win in style, holding off late a late charge from Gil de Ferran to win the Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville on Saturday night.

De Ferran got by Scott Sharp on the restart with just three laps remaining, and Sam Hornish was looking hungry too, but it was Barron who was in front when it mattered. De Ferran, Sharp and Hornish filled the remainder of the top four places.

"It feels awesome," said Barron. "It's been an up and down weekend. On the restarts we were really quick. It was just a really nervous time on the restart."

Gil de Ferran maintained his points lead with a second place finish, while it will be interesting to be a fly on the wall at Team Cheever after the team boss put his protégé in the wall in the closing stages. Scheckter, who has led pretty much all the races in his rookie year but still without a win, wasn't amused.

Lapping his team owner he ended up in the grey, and consequently the wall. And if his team owner is feisty, Scheckter is giving it back. " Why Eddie, why?" he asked.

Hornish seemed to be the man to beat, but a late race collision with George Mack slowed his progress. Airton Dare had seemed to be the man in control, but he crashed out of the lead while battling with Hornish on lap 128
