Nelson Piquet Jr wants to tackle Indianapolis 500

Ex-Formula 1 driver and inaugural Formula E champion Nelson Piquet Jr wants to contest the Indianapolis 500 before the end of his career

Nelson Piquet Jr wants to tackle Indianapolis 500

Piquet has raced a single-seater in America before, driving for Carlin on the Toronto street circuit last year during the British team's rookie Indy Lights campaign.

Later this month he will reunite with KVSH IndyCar team co-owner James Sullivan to race for his SH Racing Global Rallycross squad at the series' Washington round.

Piquet said he had looked into an Indy 500 effort with Sullivan when previously racing for his GRC team in 2013/14, and is still keen to do it in "the right situation".

"I said to Sulli I'd be interested in doing the Indy 500 if we could put something together but they couldn't," Piquet told Autosport.

"I told them I was open if they can find something.

"I would prefer to do it in a car which is good, and maybe do a race before to get a handle on the car on an oval."

Piquet has raced in more than a dozen categories since leaving F1 in 2009.

This year the Brazilian complemented his second season in FE with a part-time World Endurance Championship campaign with the Rebellion Racing LMP1 team.

He made his second appearance in the Le Mans 24 Hours with Rebellion, and said his goal was to win both the French enduro and the Daytona 24 Hours.

The 30-year-old also wants to return to the States with a full programme in NASCAR once his FE career is over, though he is not targeting the Sprint Cup.

Piquet will make a first appearance in second-tier NASCAR in two years when he takes part in the Xfinity Series' Mid-Ohio round on August 13.

"There's a few things I can put ahead of me which are things I can do when I'm a little bit older," he said.

"In that regard I'm trying to focus a little bit more on what I can do while I'm young - young-ish - and then in 10 years' time when this gets a bit faded for me, I can probably focus on World Touring Cars or rally cars or NASCAR.

"I still want to win a NASCAR championship. I was really in love with NASCAR and the only reason I didn't stay is because I ran out of sponsors.

"I wouldn't do Cup. If I had the opportunity to go back I would plan to try and win a Truck championship and if I could get a deal together to do a few Nationwide races, that would be what's possible and realistic."
