Motegi qualifying rained out

Penske's Helio Castroneves will start from pole position in Saturday's Indy Japan 300 at Twin Ring Motegi, Japan, as rain saw the grid set by entrant points

After losing a practice session yesterday to rain, showers and a thunderstorm led to today's first practice session being cancelled, with qualifying later falling to the same fate.

Castroneves will be joined on the front row by Ganassi driver Scott Dixon, with his teammate and reigning champion Dan Wheldon just behind him in third. Completing the second row is Castroneves's Penske teammate Sam Hornish Jr.

One driver who will be disappointed in the lack of running so far is Marco Andretti, who is in his rookie season and was twelfth fastest in yesterday's only practice session. Two DNFs in the first two races mean he will start the race from seventeenth position.
