Mario tips Dixon for F1
Motorsport legend Mario Andretti believes that new IRL IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon possesses the talent to succeed in Formula 1 - but believes that the Ganassi star needs to make the move soon if he is to succeed
Andretti, one of a select group of drivers who has won championships in both F1 and Indy Cars, was impressed with Dixon's achievements in the all-oval IRL this year, although he suggested that the New Zealander needed to hone his road course skills before making the transition.
"He's a cool cat," said Andretti, speaking on a promotional tour in New Zealand. "He's good. He's a very serious no-nonsense type of guy. I think he's a rare talent.
"I just hope he doesn't stay in the IRL too long. He needs to hone his road racing skills. It's very important to be up to date in Formula 1. But he certainly possesses the talent in my opinion.
"I hear he would probably like to do it in 2005. I don't think I'd wait a minute longer."
Dixon has professed a desire to switch to F1, although he is contracted for a second IRL season with Ganassi Racing in 2004.
