Manning to sit out Fontana
Darren Manning sustained a severe back contusion and a slight concussion when his car crashed during qualifying at California Speedway, Indy Racing League officials said Sunday morning
Manning was held overnight at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, California, and remained there Sunday morning, said Dr. Henry Bock, the IRL's medical director. A magnetic resonance imaging exam taken on Saturday proved negative, Bock said, and Manning is expected to be re-evaluated when he returns to Indianapolis.
Manning crashed during his second qualifying lap when his car spun in the second turn and struck the wall tail-first. He stood briefly in the cockpit before rescue workers helped him from the car, placed him on a backboard and put him in an ambulance.
"I was pretty loose on the first lap," Manning said. "On the second lap, I'm not sure what happened. Maybe a gust of wind, but I was very loose, and the car came around on me. The rest is just a bit fuzzy."
Manning's first lap - 215.822 mph - turned out to be the fourth-fastest of the qualifying session. The No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Toyota-powered Panoz G Force was withdrawn from Sunday's Toyota Indy 400, and all subsequent cars on the grid were moved forward one position.
