Josef Newgarden tops timesheets on third day of Indy 500 practice

Newgarden managed a best lap of 40.4519s at 222.486mph to put himself clear of Andretti Autosport's Ryan Hunter-Reay and his team-mate Marco Andretti.

Newgarden's time was the quickest of the week so far, and he said that he expects the speeds to climb further as more cars start to run in traffic.

"It looks like everyone was trying to race runs, and we kind of jumped in as well," he said. "It was a lot of fun. It was good to run out there with the guys, and I think we need to do more of that probably and figure out how the car operates in the draft a little bit.

"I certainly learned a lot of the way it reacts today, and we just got to keep progressing with and trying to make it even more comfortable during the race."

Ganassi driver Scott Dixon and Sunday pacesetter Sebastian Saavedra (AFS/Andretti) rounded out the top five.
