IRL pleased with aero mods
Indy Racing League officials say the first test of the speed-reducing aero-package it has developed for the Indy 500 shows the measures have been effective and have not adversely affected car stability
IRL Senior Vice President of Racing Operations Brian Barnhart said: "We're very pleased. Speeds were exactly what we anticipated. The on-track stuff very much validated the wind tunnel stuff, which had done the same for our computer simulation work. Conditions were a little windy in the afternoon, and the cars were very stable."
Twelve IRL teams took part in the test at Indianapolis last weekend. The modifications consist of a quarter-inch centre-line vertical wicker, a reverse quarter-inch wicker on the bottom side of the rear wing and curved skid plate.
Barnhart reported that speeds were well down on Helio Castroneves' 2003 pole-winning speed of 231.725 mph. "Most of the comments from the drivers have been very positive," he said, though he admitted that the set-up is not yet perfect, saying: "We have a little tweaking to do, here and there."
