Herbert's maiden Indy test is curtailed
Ex-Formula 1 star Johnny Herbert turned his first laps on the 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis on Wednesday.
He recorded a top speed of 218.915mph in a G Force-Infiniti for Heritage Motorsports before engine problems ended his session after 10 laps. Herbert is one of the few drivers to turn laps on the oval and 2.606-mile road circuit at Indianapolis, as he competed in the inaugural SAP United States Grand Prix in September 2000 for Jaguar Racing.
Jaques Lazier was fastest among the eight drivers present at 225.006mph in a Dallara-Oldsmobile for Team Menard. That lap that would have put him on the outside of the front row for last May's Indianapolis 500.
"I'm very comfortable with where we are right now," said Lazier. "We're just going to stepping it up a little bit more each time we come out. We're not trying anything fancy. We're just getting the package better and better each time, and that's what it going to take to win a championship next year."
Testing is scheduled to resume on Thursday morning with 2001 Indy 500 race winner Helio Castroneves testing for Penske Racing, which is expected to join the IRL next season.
