Herbert outpaces Indy 500 winner
Johnny Herbert made his mark on his second day of running at Indianapolis yesterday (Wednesday) by lapping quicker than this year's Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves
The former Formula 1 star lapped his G Force-Infiniti in 40.5296secs at 222.068mph, a tenth quicker than Castroneves. Herbert, who wants to add the Indy 500 title to his already impressive CV, said lapping the Brickyard was a mind-blowing experience.
"It's pretty impressive, I have to say," he said. "It gives me a much bigger sense of speed than I've ever felt before especially the way the wind was blowing going into Turn 3. It was getting pretty quick down into there. It was a good feeling for really what it's all about."
Herbert was using the test with Heritage Motorsports to get an impression of the track, having already tested its car at Kentucky earlier this year.
"I've always wanted to do the 500 for one, but I'm obviously trying to get a deal together for the whole of the season," he said. "It just gives me a good picture in my mind of what exactly it's like eventually when you come back to race. So it's been very, very useful from that point of view. It's good to follow a couple of the guys, as well, to find out what the slipstream is like, what the buffeting is like. Overall, it's been a very useful exercise."
Jaques Lazier was quickest on the day, pipping Herbert's second fastest time by almost four-tenths of a second.
