George wants IRL to topple F1
Tony George, president of the Indy Racing League, wants his series to become the foremost category of motorsport in the world
"CART has had a good run," said George, "but we're looking to knock CART, Formula 1 and NASCAR off. We want to be the premier series in the world."
George was speaking after the IRL's blue riband event, the Indy 500, which drew a sell-out 400,000-strong crowd. However, if the IRL championship is to become bigger than its feature race it will have to broaden its appeal. A race in Japan has been confirmed for 2003 (for separate story, click here.) but George has ruled out any moves to take the series away from its oval racing roots.
"I don't think the package and our formula is necessarily conducive to good road racing," he added. "I'm not interested in changing the cars to make it good for road racing. What we have is a really good product on the oval tracks. That is what we are planning on staying."
