Castroneves keeps Brickyard win
Team Penske's Helio Castroneves has kept his Indianapolis 500 victory after Team Green's protest that Paul Tracy overtook him before the final yellow flag was shown in Sunday's race was thrown out by Indy Racing League officials
Four and a half hours after the hearing began, Castroneves was confirmed as the first man to win the Indy 500 back-to-back in 31 years.
Both teams stated their case in Indianapolis today (Monday) with the use of telemetry and timings from one of the closest and most confusing finishes in racing history.
Tracy had claimed that he passed Castroneves on the outside of Turn 3 as the Brazilian was running out of fuel before the yellow flag was displayed for a crash at Turn 2 between Laurent Redon and Buddy Lazier. Castroneves said he lifted off at Turn 3 when the yellow light appeared on his dashboard to indicate a full-course caution, thus allowing Tracy - a former Penske driver - to go past.
Straight after the race, the IRL had declared Castroneves as the winner, and its vice-president of operations, Brian Barnhart, said he had "no evidence" to support Tracy's claim.
