Day 7: Junqueira fastest on final day
Cold conditions with temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius marked the final practice session prior to Indianapolis 500 Pole qualifying. But speeds didn't drop off, as Bruno Junqueira ran 231.675mph to edge out Tomas Scheckter (231.662mph) and Robbie Buhl (231.131mph)
A trio of drivers had a lucky escape when Sam Hornish Jr appeared to lose an engine and spun exiting Turn 3 with five minutes remaining in the session. Hornish did a good job to keep the spinning car off the wall, but he was nearly collected by Arie Luyendyk and Scheckter. Hornish's quickest lap was 228.083mph.
Several drivers posted their fastest speeds of the week Saturday morning, including Dario Franchitti and Sarah Fisher, both of whom topped 229mph for the first time. But Friday pacesetter Helio Castroneves was only 10th fastest at 229.919 mph.
Paul Tracy backed his Team Green Dallara-Chevrolet into the Turn 2 wall with less than five minutes remaining. The Canadian stepped from the car on his own, but his car is out of action for the weekend. Team Green has only one spare car to share between Tracy, Dario Franchitti and Michael Andretti, and it is painted in Andretti's sponsorship colours.
Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 11:00am local time, but at 10:00, a line of showers was less than 20 miles away and moving in from the west.
