Championship battle gets 'crazy'
Tony Kanaan has described the battle for this year's IRL IndyCar Series title as crazy, as four drivers enter this weekend's race at Kentucky split by just 24 points with only five rounds of the championship remaining
The Andretti Green Racing star currently heads the championship standings, with a seven point advantage over Penske star Gil de Ferran. Helio Castroneves is a further three points back with Scott Dixon a further 14 points behind in fourth. All four know that a strong result is necessary this weekend to maintain their championship challenge.
"It's going to be good, but this championship thing is getting complicated," said Kanaan, who has won one race so far this year. "Things are getting so tight. Every race is getting that way and is so competitive. It's crazy. But, we're going to do our best and we'll see."
Ganassi Racing driver Dixon, who has won a season high three races this year, lead the standings heading into last weekend's race at Gateway, but dropped to fourth when he was forced to retire from the race whilst leading. "It was a disappointing race in St. Louis," he said. "We had a dominant car out there and probably should have won that race. Team Target has won a lot of championships in the past, and they know how to win. Although we lost some ground last weekend, we're still right there."
The current form team in the championship is Penske, which has won two of the last three races to see both its drivers vault into the championship picture. Castroneves' victory at Gateway last weekend was his first since the 2002 Indianapolis 500. "Winning is great for the team's motivation," said the Brazilian. "Hopefully we'll carry it through to Kentucky and keep up the good results."
