De Ferran joins IndyCar future panel
Gil de Ferran has been chosen as the team owners' representative on the advisory panel that will consider the proposals for the IndyCar Series' future car design
The Indy Racing League announced the formation of the ICONIC (Innovative, Competitive, Open-Wheel, New, Industry-Relevant, Cost-Effective) Advisory Committee earlier this week. The committee will not decide on the 2012 car itself, but will carry out further research into the options and advise the IRL on its choice.
All team owners running full-time IndyCar entries had a vote on which of their peers they would like to represent their interests on the panel, and de Ferran was chosen today.
The Brazilian made his debut as a team owner this year when he entered into partnership with Luczo Dragon Racing. Double Champ Car champion and 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner de Ferran had previously been part of the management of the BAR/Honda Formula 1 team, and run his own squad in the American Le Mans Series.
The ICONIC committee is expected to report back to the IRL by July. Established constructors Lola, Dallara and Swift are vying with new organisations DeltaWing and BAT to create the 2012 IndyCar.
