IndyCar announces new testing limits for 2015

IndyCar teams will be subject to new testing restrictions for 2015, with private tests prohibited within the season, although open tests prior to selected races will be reintroduced

Under the regulations, which will apply from August 31 this year through to September 20, 2015, teams will be permitted a total of 14 test days including engine manufacturer tests, open tests, and full-size windtunnel testing.

Full-season entrants will be capped at a maximum of 10,000 miles for all on-track activity from the first race or open test of 2015 through to the end of the season.

There will be provisions made for tyre tests, new teams and first-year drivers.

Derrick Walker, IndyCar's president of competition, said that the aim of the new regulations was to limit costs and accommodate the 2015 calendar.

"The reason for changing the testing regulations is about trying to contain the costs and fit into our new schedule," he said.

"Competition drives teams to test as much as they can because they're trying to win races, but combined with the schedule it's hard on the team members.

"Now we're making provisions for race events to have promoter day tests, where the cars will be on the track and hopefully the promoter sees that as an opportunity to open up the stands for fans and sell race tickets."

The first open test, scheduled for March 16-17 at Barber Motorsports Park, will be the first opportunity for teams to trial their manufacturer aero kits, which are slated to be raced for the first time in St Petersburg two weeks later.

Open tests will also be scheduled at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, Mid-Ohio, and Sonoma.

"Barber has a lot of fast, sweeping corners - areas where you'll really see the aero kits perform," Walker said.

"The teams can compare and relate to what they've done in the past while getting a handle on the aero kit."

The winter test season begins on September 16, with six days of manufacturer aero kit tested scheduled to take place between October 6 and January 18.

Teams are expected to take delivery of their road and street course kits on March 1 next year.
