Karam started from pole, but lost the lead to Zach Veach early on. He reclaimed the advantage just after the halfway mark and opened a gap, only to lose it when Peter Dempsey spun and brushed the wall with five laps remaining.

That brought out the yellows and allowed Carlos Munoz a chance to challenge Karam at the restart, but the American reacted perfectly to the green flag and crossed the finish line one second ahead of his rival.

It was the first win of Karam's Lights career, and moves him from fourth to second in the standings.

"It takes a lot of weight off the shoulders to take the first win," he said.

"The whole week has been awesome for us and I had no doubt that we could take the fight to Zach. We had to take care of our tyres and stay mentally strong, and that's what we did."

Championship leader Munoz held on for second ahead of Veach, whose early race heroics took too much of out of his tyres for him to remain a threat during the latter stages.

The podium finishers were the only cars left on the lead lap at the finish, and Dempsey's spin allowed Gabby Chaves to take an uncontested fourth ahead of Juan Pablo Garcia.
