Historics News: FIA evaluating whether to run its historic championships in 2020

The FIA is considering whether to run its historic championships in 2020 due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic

In an open letter Paolo Cantarella, the President of the FIA Historic Motor Sport Commission, says that a decision on whether to push ahead or cancel the 2020 championships will be made by the end of June at the latest.

The FIA Masters Historic Formula One and FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championships have only three events left on the current calendar, starting at the Silverstone Classic (31 July-2 August) before races at Zandvoort and Spa in September.

Three of the nine rounds of the FIA European Historic Sporting Rally Championship have already been cancelled.

Three were originally scheduled to run from mid-August onwards and three early season events have been postponed until the autumn.

"At present it has been confirmed to us that the majority of the competitions initially scheduled to take place by the end of July are cancelled or, for some of them, postponed to later dates," said Cantarella.

"The uncertainty of foreign competitors to freely travel and enter countries could jeopardise the validity of international events.

"It is still difficult to predict what the situation will be after the summer and therefore to be able to establish revised calendars.

"It will then be necessary to confirm whether the option of resuming our championships, even in a revised and reduced format, could take place from September onwards or whether, as has already been done for the Lurani Trophy [Formula Junior competition], we will have to decide to completely renounce a 2020 edition of some or all of our historic championships and then work out how to build and relaunch our activities in 2021 with each of the stakeholders."
