Race Collins/Lupberger shine through

TEAM Ascari scored its first FIA Sportscar Championship win on home soil at Donington Park on Sunday, capitalising as all of its rivals suffered bad luck or mechanical gremlins

Former British Formula 3 racer Ben Collins immediately leapt into third from fifth on the grid in his Ascari A410 Judd and hassled John Nielsen's Dome S101/Judd for lap after lap before finally finding a way past at the Melbourne hairpin.

Jan Lammers had already streaked into the distance in his Dome Judd, but Collins stayed out longer than anyone else before the second pit stop, inheriting the lead before handing over to Werner Lupberger, who rejoined in fourth.

On fresher rubber than the rest of the field, Lupberger was able to attack for the rest of the race. Meanwhile, ahead of Lupberger, the Lammers/Val Hillebrand Dome had to pit twice with a damaged wheel rim and Hideki Katoh, who had taken over from Nielsen, spun under pressure from the Ascari. By the time Lupberger came in for his final splash and dash stop, he was a lap ahead of the rest of the field.

BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 333SP pilot Marco Zadra increased his points lead over chief title rival Nielsen by taking second alongside Jean-Marc Gounon, while Lammers and Hillebrand finished a disappointed third. The Rowan Racing duo of Martin O'Connell and Warren Carway made it a double British success, scoring their first FIA SCC victory in the SR2 class.
