Qual: Zytek beats Audis

The all-conquering Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx squad was put in the shade by the Zytek prototype of Robbie Kerr and Chris Dyson in qualifying for the Silverstone round of the Le Mans Endurance Series on Friday

Kerr lapped the British-built sportscar in 1m34.033s to top ex-F1 stars Johnny Herbert and Allan McNish in the Veloqx Audis. Herbert lapped in 1m35.724s, but wasn't unduly concerned about his chances in the race.

"My fastest lap during the morning session felt good and fast but obviously compared to that set by the Zytek, it was nothing particularly special," said Herbert. "But, having seen the Zytek through the chicanes at Monza and Le Mans, we're not that surprised. I'm confident that in the race, the gap will not be as big and it'll be a good race for us again."

Herbert's team-mate Jamie Davies was in the wars, however, suffering right rear suspension and bodywork damage when forced off the circuit lapping a back-marker. The second Audi of McNish lapped in 1m36.395s to take third on the grid.

"Qualifying has been a little disappointing but in reality it will not affect our race prospects whatsoever," said the Scot. "We made improvements to the car in between the two qualifying sessions. Having won the last race in Germany, Pierre and I will be pushing our very hardest for a second consecutive LMES victory."
