Maserati: Gardel exclusion justified

Maserati boss Claudio Berro believes that justice has prevailed after the disqualification of Pedro Lamy and Gabriele Gardel from fourth place at last weekend's FIA GT round in Bahrain

Gardel initially took the GT1 drivers' title after his fourth place finish, but that was thrown into doubt afterwards when he and Lamy were disqualified from fourth because there wasn't enough fuel left in the Ferrari 550's tank after the race.

Gardel's Larbre Competition team have appealed the decision, meaning it is not yet known who has won the championship.

Berro's Maserati drivers Timo Scheider and Michael Bartels stand to benefit the most from the decision by inheriting the title.

Berro told Autosprint: "Justice prevailed. We often pitted for a splash and dash while they never did. Now I want to re-open the Zhuhai issue and, if check irregularities are established, I'll request the cancellation of the race [results]."

Berro is also unhappy that Gardel potentially won the title alone and said he will ask organisers to ban partner changes during the season next year.

"I would also find unfair the possibility that Gardel wins the title by himself: the series is won by the pair," he added, "while Lamy drove whenever Aston asked him to. I'll ask the FIA to ban partner changes during the season."
