Maserati crashes out of Spa lead
The Maserati that appeared to be on course for victory in the Spa 24 Hours has just lost the lead after a dramatic exit
Alex Muller had built up a lead of over a minute in the #2 Vitaphone MC12 he shares with Miguel Ramos, Pedro Lamy and Eric Van de Poele. But just after the 18-hour mark the car suffered a suspected tyre failure and Muller was pitched off the road.
At present, it seems unlikely that he will be able to make it back to the pits.
The incident leaves the Selleslagh Racing and PK Chevrolet Corvettes fighting for the lead. Bert Longin had taken the advantage for Sellelsagh, but has just been in for an earlier than planned pitstop, handing a narrow lead to Jos Menten, who himself had an unscheduled stop earlier in the stint.
The Phoenix Audi R8 LMS now looks set to take third overall, though the sole remaining competitive Vitaphone Maserati (#33) is less than two laps behind it and can lap faster.
