Joest to continue in ALMS
The Audi Sport Team Joest squad will return to the American Le Mans Series with a pair of all-conquering R8 sportscar's in 2003, albeit as a privateer entry
The future of Joest had been unclear following Audi's recent confirmation that they would not be entering works teams in either the ALMS or the Le Mans 24 Hours race. The team will now enter the American-based series under the Team Joest banner.
Running Audi R8's, Joest has won both the ALMS championship and the Le Mans 24 Hours race for the past three years. However, Joest has a long history and successful history running as a privateer team, taking four victories in the endurance classic with non-works cars, most recently in 1997.
Audi is believed to be building up for a return to Le Mans in 2004, and has kept star drivers Frank Biela, Rinaldo Capello, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro under contract for next season. The four are now likely to remain with Joest for its ALMS campaign.
R8 chassis will continue to be run by other private teams, including ALMS entrant Champion Racing.
