Gavin signs for Chevrolet in 2002

Former Saleen driver Oliver Gavin has signed to drive for arch rival Chevrolet in the American Le Mans series next year, as predicted in AUTOSPORT magazine last week

The 1995 British Formula 3 champion, who drove with the Saleen Speedlab factory team at this year's Le Mans 24 Hour race, will complete a part season with the all-conquering GTS class Corvette team driving at the French endurance classic as well as three rounds of the ALMS.

"I'm delighted to join the team to defend the C5-R's titles at Le Mans and in the ALMS," said Gavin. "The Corvette is a legend - a thoroughbred - and the chance to drive it and prove myself with these champions is an incredible honour."

Gavin will take the place of Scott Pruett as one of the team's two drivers brought in for key events including Sebring, Road America and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The former McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award winner will join team regulars Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell, Andy Pilgrim, Franck Freon and Kelly Collins.

"Olly brings a wealth of experience to our stable of drivers. Experience gained in some of the road racing world's most competitive series," said Corvette Racing's Doug Fehan. "He has the balance of skills and experience that will compliment those of our other drivers as we defend our ALMS manufacturers' championship and look to repeat as GTS class winners at Le Mans."
