FIA Sportscar race: Dome wins
Former Grand Prix driver Jan Lammers and his young team-mate Val Hillebrand claimed victory in the FIA Sportscar Championship race at Brno on Saturday afternoon
The pair, who now lead the title standings too, led all but three laps of the two and a half hour race in their Racing for Holland Dome.
Hillebrand led from the start despite pressure from Didier Cottaz's Courage. He handed the car over to Lammers after an hour and a half with a healthy lead, leaving the veteran to set a comfortable pace for victory in searingly hot conditions.
Cottaz's team-mate Boris Derichebourg closed to within seven seconds of Lammers, but the former Le Mans and Daytona winner had things under control.
"We had the pace to be really nice and consistent today which in turn allowed us to be gentle on the car," Lammers said. "The safety car gave us some breathing space, but I think we could have controlled the attack from Courage."
Cottaz and Derichebourg claimed second place, ahead of Mauro Baldi and Vincenzo Sospiri in the new R&M. The race marked Sospiri's return to competition for the first time since 1999, when the Italian was forced to stop driving because of a persistent shoulder injury.
Luca Riccitelli's Lucchini took SR2 class honours after an exciting battle with an older version of the car, driven by Ranieri Randaccio and Leonardo Maddalena. Riccitelli passed Maddalena in the closing stages as the latter struggled with a suspension problem.
