Fassler/Deletraz take Silverstone pole
Phoenix Corvette's Marcel Fassler and Jean-Denis Deletraz will start on pole for the FIA GT Championship season-opener after Fassler topped this afternoon's qualifying session at a damp Silverstone
Fassler held on despite a late challenge from Christophe Bouchut in the Selleslagh Racing Team's Corvette C6R. The French driver closed to within 0.083 seconds of Fassler's pole time but had to settle for the outside of the front row.
The slippery conditions shook up the rest of the order, with the G2 and GT2 cars enjoying a slightly drier track for their session than the top class machines would when they emerged in the second half of qualifying.
Sean Edwards was third-fastest overall in the ARC Bratislava G2 class Saleen S7R, ahead of the Ryan Sharp/Karl Wendlinger Jetalliance Aston Martin and Mike Hezemans and Fabrizio Gollin in the second Phoenix Corvette.
The new Gigawave Aston team completed the top six with Allan Simonsen and Philipp Peter.
CR Scuderia Ferrari driver Andrew Kirkaldy snatched GT2 class pole by a full second with his final lap of the session, and was classified seventh overall in the car he shares with Rob Bell.
Until Kirkaldy's late improvement, Richard Westbrook had been dominating the GT2 session for Prospeed Porsche, but he could not match the Scot's final time and had to settle for second in class and tenth overall.
Reigning champions Vitaphone Maserati had a difficult session, with GP2 convert Xandi Negrao their fastest driver in eighth place and Andrea Bertolini and Michael Bartels taking a lowly 15th in the No.1 MC12.
