Qualifying: Johansson clinches it
Stefan Johansson strolled his way to an unsurprising pole position at Estoril for the third round of the European Le Mans Series, beating the Pescarolo Sport Courage-Peugeot into second place by almost three seconds
Johansson set the fastest time of 1m28.876s in slightly damp conditions and although the rain had stopped by the time the session started, the going was declared wet. Most drivers elected for slick tyres despite the damp conditions.
"I made a couple of small mistakes and we had some brake problems since yesterday," said Johansson. "We're still fighting a little bit, that's the only reason I went out for another run, to see if we could find another solution, but I locked up quite heavily going into the corner on the back straight and I lost six or seven tenths. It was still good enough to get pole today, so I can't complain too much."
The Pescarolo car of Jean-Cristophe Boullion, Laurent Redon and Boris Derichebourg finished just over a second ahead of the third and final prototype car, Dussau/Gomez/Bich's LMP 675 class Debora.
Top of the GTS class was the works-supported Saleen S7R of Konrad/Brun/Slater, closely followed by the RML sister car of Lambert/McKellar/Goodwin in fifth.
The lead GT car was the PK Sport Porsche 911GT3-RS of Monteiro/Liddell/Masarati.
