Ferdinand Habsburg tops final day of GP3 testing in Abu Dhabi

Ferdinand Habsburg topped the final day of the post-season GP3 test in Abu Dhabi to give MP Motorsport a clean-sweep of fastest times at the three-day event

European Formula 3 front-runner and 2017 Macau Grand Prix star Habsburg set the best time of the morning, which stood throughout the later session as the GP3 field completed the test either side of the Formula 2 drivers taking to the Yas Marina track for the first session of their last test day of the year.

Jehan Daruvala, also driving for MP, and Nikita Mazepin (ART Grand Prix) completed the top three.

The final day of the test started an hour earlier than the previous two days, and was swiftly interrupted when David Beckmann crashed into the barriers at the first corner.

After Niko Kari - fastest for MP on the opening two days of the test but driving for Campos Racing on the final day - Mazepin and Daruvala each took turns at the top, Habsburg put in a time of 1m54.869s shortly before the chequered flag brought an end to the morning session.

With only four drivers setting their best times of the day in the later running, Habsburg - the only driver to break into the 1m54-second bracket - finished with the fastest time, 0.155s clear of Daruvala and 0.164s quicker than Mazepin.

Kari ended up fourth ahead of Ferrari Formula 1 junior Callum Ilott and Max Defourny.

Jake Hughes was seventh fastest for ART, with Pedro Piquet and Gabriel Aubry eighth and ninth for Trident and ART respectively.

Three-time GP3 race winner and Ferrari junior Giuliano Alesi rounded out the top 10 for the Trident squad where he competed in the third-tier category in 2017.

Alessio Lorandi was 11th for Trident, with Sauber F1 development driver Tatiana Calderon 14th for Jenzer Motorsport.

After his morning crash restricted him to just two laps in the opening session, Beckmann was able to improve to 15th fastest overall later on.

Dorian Boccolacci - the winner of the final race of the 2017 GP3 season in Abu Dhabi last weekend - brought up the rear of the field.
