Zytek wins A1 Grand Prix V8 contract

The engine supply contract for the new, Dubai-based A1 Grand Prix 'spec' single-seater series has been awarded to Zytek Engineering, the UK specialist in Repton that supplies the current FIA F3000 engine. Six companies tendered for the deal [Jun 3] with series founder Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Al Maktoum. Zytek will manufacture a new, 3.4-litre, all-aluminium, 90deg V8. The power output will be set at 550bhp with the option to increase it at a later date

The new series was originally set to use a V6 built by Langford Performance Engineering, which built such an engine for the first prototype Lola chassis.

A1 Grand Prix series manager Stephen Watson said: "We took several factors into consideration when making the final decision on the specification of the engine. It made sense to use a V8 at reduced power levels to obtain the required 550bhp as opposed to taking a V6 to its limits and compromising reliability. In Zytek we have proven reliability, service history and the ability to customise the power plant to our exact specifications."
