Zaugg takes dominant win
Adrian Zaugg excelled in the wet conditions to score a crushing win in the A1GP feature race at Eastern Creek today
Problems hit two of the most fancied runners and title protagonists before the race even began.
Team New Zealand's Jonny Reid was forced to start from pitlane after stalling en route to the grid, while Loic Duval (Team France) stalled at the beginning of the warm-up lap and continued to be plagued by a clutch problem for the rest of the day.
That allowed Neel Jani (Team Switzerland) to move into the early lead ahead of Robbie Kerr (Team Great Britain) and Zaugg. That's the way it stayed until the first round of pitstops.
After Jani and Kerr pitted, Zaugg stayed out much longer on his first set of tyres. This set up his victory, as for these few laps he absolutely flew. There was little doubt he would emerge in front after his stop and that proved to be the case.
Neither Jani nor Kerr had an answer for the rest of the race either. Zaugg controlled the pace, keeping the lead around the 10-second mark all the way and negotiating the second round of stops with little trouble.
Kerr occasionally pressured Jani, but gradually dropped back as the race went on. After a brief off-track moment early in his second stint he didn't pose a major threat.
Team Brazil's Sergio Jimenez ran a consistent fourth throughout the race and finished there. Duval's race ended in retirement after a clash with Jonathan Summerton as he tried to work his way through the field, while Reid could only recover to ninth.
The bad results for France and New Zealand were good news for Switzerland and anyone promoting the four remaining events, as it served to close up the championship once again following a couple of bad races for Jani.
France and New Zealand are now tied at the top, with Switzerland just three points behind.
