Zanardi makes standing appearance
Double CART champion Alex Zanardi made his first standing public appearance over the weekend since losing both his legs during an accident during the German round of Champ Car series in September
The Italian left hospital in Berlin at the end of October, where he was taken after his horrific accident which saw Alex Tagliani hit his car at close to 200mph.
Since then he has been undergoing treatment and training to be fitted with prosthetic limbs and stood up for the first time in public on Saturday to receive a special award from Italian magazine Autosprint.
"I'm not able to walk yet, but this [to stand up] is the first step of the most important race," said Zanardi.
Zanardi has been undergoing special treatment in Bologna as he prepares to walk again, with specialist Dr Claudio Costa, who helped five-time world motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan.
"I have an extraordinary team - the famous Dr.Costa," added Zanardi. "It's a very long time that I was not getting excited like now, I'm so excited that I felt my legs trembling. However I wish to thank all of you, the race is very hard but I will do my best to win it".
Zanardi received rapturous applause from the audience and stage alike, including from Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher, who was on hand to receive yet another award.
