WRC commission agrees safety rules
The World Rally Championship Commission is to present a series of safety proposals to the World Motor Sport Council on October 13, following a meeting of the WRCC and other interested parties in Paris last week. The group unanimously agreed on clarified regulations for servicing, improving stage safety and the controversial SupeRally competitor re-entry system
The commission also agreed that for the final asphalt rounds of the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship, in Japan and Corisca, that competitors would be allowed to send a safety car through the route before it is officially closed for competition. In 2005, manufacturers would be asked to provide one-car collectively to perform a safety check of the stages.
A proposal has been made that teams provide a fixed number of specified mechanics and engineers for servicing, while the SupeRally system will be retained and modified. Any crew that fails to complete a day's competition will entitled to restart the next leg but a five-minute penalty for each stage missed attached to their overall time.
