Webber to test Jaguar R3

Australian Formula 1 driver Mark Webber will test Jaguar's R3 car at Barcelona on June 28, with the carrot of a drive for 2003, according to Autosport magazine. With continued uncertainty over the future of leading driver Eddie Irvine, Jaguar are anxious to line up potential replacements

Irvine - the oldest driver on the F1 circuit at 36 - has said he will make a decision on his future after seeing the aerodynamic improvements to the Jaguar R3 at the British Grand Prix in July. The Northern Irishman would also agree to a pay-cut, if the car is competitive.

Webber has impressed for the financially-strapped Minardi team this season, including a fifth place on his debut in Melbourne. The Australian is still under contract with Renault, where he was a test driver for Benetton last year, but could be without a drive if Minardi's financial situation worsens. Jaguar spokesman Nav Sidhu told Autosport: "This one day test is aimed at evaluating Mark and subsequently exploring our options for the 2003 season. We have not yet began official discussions with Eddie Irvine for next season and in the event that the two sides agree to part company, Mark's test is nothing more than a possible contingency option."
