Vasser has first run for Rahal

Champ Car veteran Jimmy Vasser had his first taste of driving for Team Rahal at the Sebring road course yesterday (Thursday)

The 1996 CART champion was joined by a host of other teams, including Scot Dario Franchitti.

"I'll admit that I'm pretty damn excited about the 2002 season," said Vasser, who moved from Patrick Racing to Team Rahal in November. "This is a very good operation and I have been with good ones at Ganassi and Patrick in my CART career. Having the Lola again as well as the Ford horsepower has given me a strong combination for the upcoming season."

The deal with Rahal to drive the Shell-backed car became possible after Kenny Brack left the team to join Ganassi. "Bobby talked to me in 1998 about driving for him but I had a commitment to my Target guys back then," said Vasser. "Now I feel comfortable with Team Rahal. I feel good about our chances with the Shell car this year. The FedEx Series is tough and I have been working out all winter to be ready.

"At my age (36), I have to be in better shape to race against the younger guys. I can see what Bobby told me a few years ago. You have to be prepared for the season as you get older."

More details on the test to follow.
