Vasser favourite for Mo Nunn seat

Champ Car ace Jimmy Vasser is the favourite to take over the seat left vacant by the seriously injured Alex Zanardi at Mo Nunn Racing for the remaining four races of this year, according to this week's Autosport magazine

The 1996 CART champion was set to drive Zanardi's car at last weekend's Rockingham 500, but the move was blocked at the last minute by Vasser's current team boss Pat Patrick.

Former Formula1 driver Johnny Herbert was also a possible candidate to take the seat at the behest of Zanardi's wife Daniella, but in the event, Mo Nunn decided not to run the car and only team mate Tony Kanaan's Reynard-Honda competed at the weekend. (Click here, for previous story)

A deal for Vasser to drive Zanardi's car for the remainder of this season would appear to make sense. The 35-year-old has already announced that he is switching to Team Rahal for next year and as such is believed to be out of favour within the Patrick squad.

The Toyota-powered team is currently running a third car for Indy Lights points leader Townsend Bell and Vasser has lost his race engineer Ed Natham to the young rookie.

Should Vasser leave for Mo Nunn, Patrick could return to being a two-car outfit with Bell and Roberto Morneo. However, the decision could rest with the former team's engine supplier Honda.
