Rahal confirms return to Indy 500
Top Champ Car outfit Team Rahal has confirmed that it will return to the Indianapolis 500 next year for the first time in seven years
Rahal will join fellow CART Championship Series teams Penske Racing, Newman Haas and Chip Ganassi Racing at the blue-riband event, the jewel in the crown event of the rival Indy Racing League.
Team boss Bobby Rahal told this week's Autosport magazine: "We're absolutely looking forward to going back to Indy. We've tried to do it for the past couple of years, but just haven't had the funding. We do now and will be announcing the details later. There was no resistance from [engine supplier] Ford."
The team will have to use the IRL's Chevrolet or Nissan Infiniti motors and Dallara or G-Force chassis. Neither decision has been taken yet.
With more CART teams returning to the Indy 500, Rahal believes the technical rules of Champ Car racing and the IRL should grow closer together. The IRL has a new engine specification in place to come on line in 2003, but CART has yet to decide on its own rules. Rahal believes the series should adopt the same regulations as its rival.
