Tracy is the first man in the Mexican wall
Paul Tracy claimed the ignominious honour of being the first man to crash at the new Monterrey circuit on Friday afternoon
The Canadian smashed the right side wheels of his Team Kool Green Reynard-Honda against the concrete wall exiting the final turn of the 2.1-mile Fundidora Park road course.
"I just went out on fresh tyres and I felt the car was going to be pretty good," said Tracy. "But I was on cold tyres and just dropped a wheel in the dust. Then I was a passenger. I couldn't turn, I couldn't brake and that was it. The car just went straight for the wall. I did all I could do."
Tracy was one of many drivers to bemoan the slippery surface of the brand new race track, which is still in the final stages of completion. An Indy Lights session scheduled for Thursday afternoon was cancelled because Dayton's selection of race tyres was stuck in Mexican customs.
"The line is improving, but if you get off it, there's no stopping going off the track," added Tracy. "It's pretty tricky. You can't even get a couple of inches off the groove. Everybody is taking the same line, so we'll have to see if it improves as the weekend goes on. It's a nice layout, but there's just no grip. They need to do a lot of running here. But the track wasn't ready so there wasn't much they could have done."
