Toyota takes Lexus to 2004 Rolex series

Toyota is to supply four Daytona Prototype teams with engines branded for Lexus, its luxury road car division, for Grand Am's 2004 Rolex Sports Car Series. Chip Ganassi Racing, Doran-Lista Racing, Cegwa Sport and Michael Shank Racing will race a 4.35-litre version of the production engine used in the LS, SC, and GS models. The all-aluminium, DOHC V8, delivering 500bhp at 8000rpm, has been developed by Toyota Racing Development USA in its 45,000sq.ft facility in Tustin, CA

"It's an exciting new venture for Lexus to enter Grand American competition at the highest level and compete on the race track against Porsche and BMW," said Mike Wells, Lexus VP of marketing. "The Rolex series has grown tremendously in the past year, and we're happy to be a part of its bright future."

New to the Rolex series, the Ganassi team was equipped with the Toyota Indy V8 when it won the 2003 IndyCar Series, while Shank Racing will be also making its Rolex debut in 2004 after successful seasons in Toyota Atlantic. Cegwa and Doran-Lista will be competing for the second year in the series.

Team Lexus, with owner/driver Chuck Goldsborough, has been a consistent front-runner in the Grand Am Cup ST class for the past three years. This team has been re-signed for the 2004 season and beyond.
