TOCA Tour rejects SEAT one-make series
The new SEAT Leon Cupra R Championship will not be on the British Touring Car Championship support bill in 2003, as expected. TOCA Tour director Richard West could not squeeze the new one-make series into the already crowded BTCC weekend. SEAT UK in Milton Keynes hopes that the series, which will comprise double-header races at six meetings during the 2003 season, will be included in another high-profile package, such as the BRDC's F3/GT promotion
SEAT Sport return to track racing with the SEAT Leon Supercopa in Spain this year, when 23 cars competed in a race prior to the Spanish GP on the Circuit de Catalunya. The inaugural series otherwise shared billing with the Spanish GT Championship.
The racing SEAT Leon Cupra R is fitted with a rollcage and other safety equipment, bigger wheel rims, a rear spoiler and front wings. Its 1.8-litre 20VT engine has been engineered to deliver an additional 40bhp over the road car, taking it to 250bhp. The vehicle weight is reduced to 1030kg.
SEAT Sport technical director James Puig commented: "This is SEAT Sport's first sporting event in the new direction the brand is taking. The objective is to export it to several countries."
