The Monaco inside line

Fact: Michael Schumacher has not won the Monaco Grand Prix since 2001. Potentially the quickest man on the track in each of the last two races in the Principality, his race has been compromised, it would be fair to say, by qualifying behind cars on softer Michelin rubber and then not being able to realise his potential race pace.

With the one-lap performance of the Michelin a talking point this season, he could well face a similar scenario this weekend. Even Ferrari has admitted concern over Monte Carlo. Which is why 1-2 on Michael achieving a record-equalling sixth Monaco win does not look very attractive, while 6-1 on Jenson Button is worth serious thought.

Of the other Michelin men, Juan Pablo Montoya, last year's winner and 2002 pole man, is 12-1, but Williams has not looked too convincing of late. The Renault drivers, Alonso and Trulli, are quoted at 16-1 and 22-1 respectively. Trulli always qualifies well in Monte Carlo and might even be worth a punt at 20-1 for the pole. The R24 hasn't looked that convincing of late either, however, and so 10-3 for a podium might be more sensible.

The McLarens aren't fancied at all but Monte Carlo is a little different and Raikkonen and Coulthard might not be daft bets for podium finishes at 8-1 and 16-1 respectively.

There could also be some decent pickings to be had by backing some of the more experienced men to score points. Giancarlo Fisichella at 11-4 should be top of the list, while '96 winner Olivier Panis could net Toyota's first score of the year at 9-2 and Jaguar's Mark Webber at 5-2 is interesting.

Of the match bets, the experienced Panis in a reliable Toyota against Jaguar rookie Klien offers a 50 per cent return on investment!
