Tandy is third Briton to scoop prestigious Porsche award

The 28-year-old follows in the footsteps of John Fitzpatrick and Tim Sugden as a British winner of the prize, which is awarded to the most successful non-factory Porsche driver at the end of each season.

Other winners since the inception of the Porsche Cup in 1970 include sportscar legends Bob Wollek, Klaus Ludwig and Henri Pescarolo.

Tandy claimed the Porsche Cup, which he was awarded on Saturday night, after competing in seven different series in the Stuttgart manufacturer's machinery during 2012. His successes include wins in the International GT Open and ADAC GT Masters.

"When you look at the names that have won the Porsche Cup, it clearly means something," said former German Carrera Cup champion Tandy. "It is great to be recognised for your efforts, especially if you don't end up winning a championship.

"It was a real battle with Raymond Narac [who owns and drives for the Imsa Performance squad] at the final GT Open race at Barcelona. We both knew that whoever finished in front was basically going to win the Porsche Cup."

The prize awarded to Tandy is a new 911 Carrera S road car.

Fitzpatrick won the Porsche Cup three times in 1972, '74 and '80, while Sugden triumphed in 2005. Wollek won the award no fewer than seven times.

Tandy's only confirmed drive for 2013 is a seat in February's Daytona 24 Hours in a Konrad-run Porsche 911 GT3 Cup entered under the Orbit Racing banner.
