Tag tops oval testing

Alex Tagliani topped the charts at the first major Champ Car oval test of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Fifteen car-and-driver combinations were scheduled to run

The French-Canadian ace's Reynard-Ford was unofficially timed at 26.3 seconds on the 1.5-mile oval, matching the mark set several weeks ago by Tony Kanaan's Reynard-Honda.

Jimmy Vasser ran a 26.4-second lap in Team Rahal's Lola-Ford but said the times were misleading.

"We ran a 26.7 as soon as we unloaded and we could have gone quite a bit quicker if we wanted to," remarked the American. "We weren't running Homestead downforce levels because we wanted to focus on preparing for the race at Motegi where the speeds are quite a bit higher. I'm very happy with where we stand."

Tagliani ran a 26.28 on Tuesday and a 26.30 on Wednesday, when track conditions were reported as considerably slower.

"I've come away from these two days very confident about our competitiveness," Tagliani said. "The fast pace that we were able to set in the last two days means that we'll be going to Japan with lots of confidence."
