SuperRacing Weekend bids for GP2 races

Europe's new-for-2005 GP2 one-make single-seater series may feature at selected LG SuperRacing Weekend events, reports Autosport. The Eurosport satellite TV channel, an SRW shareholder, is negotiating with the series promoter and the Formula One group about placing as many as five GP2 races in SRW's FIA GT and WTCC promotions. GP2 will also replace the FIA F3000 class on the 2005 F1 racecard

"GP2 won't always be able to race with F1, because there may not even be 10 grands prix in Europe in the future, and it would be too expensive to do the 'flyaway' races," said Eurosport director Angelo Codignoni. "If extra races are needed, then it makes sense for them to come onto the SRW package. It would be a good option for the series."

GP2 series manager Bruno Michel admitted that the SRW was one option for the new championship, which will be based on 'spec' Dallara chassis and Mecachrome V8 engines. "All we know is that we will be racing with F1 at most of the European grands prix, but there is no number set in stone," he said. "We could, for example, end up having eight races with grands prix and four elsewhere."
