Summerton: F2 could help F1 chances

The 21-year-old American will make his F2 test debut at Portimao later this week with a view to contesting next year's series.

He is regarded as the American driver most likely to end up at US F1 in the near future, and thinks racing in F2 could improve his chances of a deal.

"I have been in touch with US F1 for the last year or so and there is good communication between us," said Summerton.

"They are still looking for a budget next year, which makes things a little tough but they have certainly let me know that they want me.

"That is also one of the main reasons to look at running in Formula 2 - it is a great way to gain exposure and showcase your ability. There is already the test with Williams on offer at the end of the year so to have the chance of working with a team like that is a great opportunity."

Having previously competed in the Formula 3 Euro Series and A1GP, Summerton returned to America two years ago and has since raced in Indy Lights and the Atlantic series - coming within a tie-break of the title in the latter.

He now feels his F1 ambitions are better served by racing in Europe again.

"We came back to America in 2008 and 2009 to try and re-raise awareness about my career to the people back home," said Summerton. "Trying to find funds to compete in Europe is difficult but we feel that it is time to come back here and keep plugging away."
