Speedway reports record 2002 results

America's second biggest circuit owner, NYSE-listed Speedway Motorsports achieved a four percent increase in ticket sales in 2002 and has announced record full-year earnings from continuing operations for the third consecutive year. The company's 2002 fiscal and fourth-quarter results are not directly comparable to those for 2001, for calendar and other reasons, but total revenues increased $710,000 to $376.0m (with admissions revenue at $141.3m) and income to $61.2m

Speedway owns and operates Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Lowe's Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway, among other interests such as subsidiaries SMI Properties, 600 Racing and radio station Performance Racing Network. The accounts reflect a $4.3m settlement for the cancellation of the Champ Car race at TMS in 2001 Q4.

COO and president H.A. 'Humpy' Wheeler commented: "These 2002 results, and importantly our admissions revenues, reflect year-over-year increases which are encouraging given our challenges with the economy, reduced travel, declines in corporate spending and poor weather conditions."

Chairman and CEO Bruton Smith added: "We made significant strides in 2002. We're proud of being instrumental in elevating motorsports to its current national prominence and look forward to building an even stronger future with audience growth remaining unmatched by other professional sports. Our core fan base has made this the most stable sport in America, and we remain committed first to them."
