Schmidt 'serious but stable' after crash
Indy Racing League driver Sam Schmidt is in a 'serious but stable' condition at Orlando Regional Medical Centre after undergoing surgery for a spinal injury.
He was injured following a massive crash during an Indy Racing League open test at Orlando's Walt Disney World Speedway.
Surgeons used a pin and a bone graft to fuse Schmidt's C-3 and C-4 vertebrae, which suffered contusions and bruising in the accident Thursday morning, said Dr. Henry Bock, Indy Racing League director of medical services.
He added that Schmidt was alert and responsive following the procedure.
The 35-year-old driver hit the outside retaining wall of Turn Two in his 1999 Aurora, following a 180-degree spin.
Schmidt was running in his first test session of the year following lengthy rehabilitation as a result of a crash last year.
The Las Vegas native was testing for the first time after operations to repair a fractured left foot and a damaged toe on his right foot as a result of a crash in the final event of last year's IRL season.
Schmidt tested on Wednesday, running in the 163mph range, before yesterday's crash.
