RuSPORT duo top first practice
AJ Allmendinger and Justin Wilson have successfully put their troubled Houston weekend behind them by topping the timesheets in first practice at Monterrey, Mexico
The Fundidora Park course lived up to its reptutation of being 'green' - the track surface was slippery, and even the old hands had some wild moments in the course of the 75-minute session.
However, with lap times of 1:16.250and 1:16.264, Allmendinger and Wilson beat reigning champion Sebastien Bourdais of Newman/Haas by approximately a tenth of a second.
2003 champion Paul Tracy was a further 0.4 seconds adrift in his Forsythe Championship Racing entry.
Bruno Junqueira, last year's winner at Monterrey, didn't break into the 1:16, but it certainly wasn't for the lack of trying, launching the second Newman/Haas car high over the kerbs in the dying minutes of the session.
PKV Racing's Oriol Servia and Katherine Legge finished sixth and tenth respectively, with Legge proving the quickest of the rookies.
In between them lay Nelson Philippe (CTE Racing-HVM), Mexican hero Mario Dominguez (Forsythe), and Team Australia's Alex Tagliani, who is showing no ill effects from his Houston shunt.
